Anime Outisde of Japan it is the word for Japanese animation. Inside Japan it refers to any kind of animation.


Bara Homoerotic manga produced by males for gay males. Unlike yaoi manga; in bara, the males tend to be very masculine.


Bishounen "Beautiful boy" Japanese term for anime/manga characters that have beautiful and delicate features.


BL - Boys' Love The term to generally describe any kind of media containing malexmale content. It can be explicit or not.


Canon In fandoms, the word that describes "official" relationships. For example Yuki and Shuuichi in Gravitation.


Doujinshi Manga volumes produced by fans of certain anime or manga. The story tends to be a spin-off of the original anime/manga. It is a popular term between BL fans because many doujinshi artists depict romantic relationships between male characters from non-BL series.


Fanfiction Fan created stories.


Fanservice (in Japan, sometimes referred to as simply "service") The activity of including actions to "please" the fans. In the BL fandom, two males hugging or kissing (or pretending to) is considered fanservice. Outisde BL, it could be showing a character in a revealing outfit, like a bikini.


Fudanshi The male equivalent of fujoshi (see below)


Fujoshi In Japanese, literally meaning "rotten woman". It started as a pejorative name for BL fans, today it is widely accepted as a name for the BL fandom.


Jisho Dictionary in Japanese


Manga Japanese comics, also known as graphic novels. Can be of any genre, depicting any theme and for different audiences.

Mahnwa Comic books or graphic novels with a similar style to Japanese mangas, but produced by Korean artists.


Seme The Japanese term for the "top" in a malexmale relationship. It means "to attack".


Shounen-ai The Japanese term for "boys love", this genre  of BL doesn't contain adult material.


Oneshots A one-chapter manga.


OVA/OAV - Original Video Animation Anime that is only released as VHS, DVD or Blu-Ray. The lenght of the animation tends to be around 30 to 60 minutes.



S&M - Sadism and masochism The term used to describe the master/slave themes in adult media. It includes usage of whips, handcuffs, gags and other different devices. The "sadist" is the master (top) and the "masochist" is the slave (bottom).


Shipping From the word "relationship", describes the way some fans support imaginary relationships between characters who originally aren't involved in a romantic relationship (they aren't limited to homosexual relationships)


Slash The term for describing imaginary homosexual relationships between males from different media (both inside and outside of yaoi anime/manga). For the femalexfemale relationships the term is femslash.


Yaoi Term widely used to describe a manga/anime with homoerotic content between males. Unlike bara, it is produced by females for a female audience and the male characters are bishounen.


Yuri Term used to describe a manga/anime with homosexual relationships between females.


Uke The Japanese term for the "bottom" in a malexamale relationship. It means "to receive".


Vanilla Term to describe plain sex, contrary to S&M.
